Summary: The Behavioral Health's Response Against Violence Escalation (BRAVE) Officer patrols assigned areas of the Hospital campus in order to maintain an orderly and safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Engages with patients and promotes a safe and therapeutic environment while enforcing Hospital policies and procedures, and applicable laws. De-escalates fear and tension in patients, visitors, and staff. Upholds the mission, vision, values and customer service standards of Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron (CHMCA). Responsibilities: 1. Patrol assigned areas providing a highly visible presence, working independently with minimal to no supervision. 2. Responds to critical incidents, alarms and all calls requesting Department of Public Safety services. 3. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively via two way radio, computer, email, telephone, and verbal communications. 4. Assess, plan, communicate and engage in crisis avoidance and interventions. 5. Ability to effectively de-escalate fear and tension in patients and staff using de-escalation and other communication techniques. 6. Collects behavioral crisis data and records information from Behavioral Health Units. 7. Instructs Aggression Management training courses. 8. Assists Police Officers in the arrest and detention of suspects and performs the job duties of Officer when required. 9. Complete and successfully pass Field Training with a Field Training Officer (FTO). 10. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by Supervision or Command Staff. Other information: Technical Expertise 1.Experience assessing, plan, communicate and engage in crisis avoidance and interventions. 2.Experience in aggression management. 3.Experience de-escalating fear and tension in patients and staff using de-escalation and other communication techniques. Education and Experience 1. Must be 21 years of age or older at time of hire. 2. High School Diploma or equivalent. 3. Associate's Degree in a related field. In lieu of an Associate's degree, possess a minimum of three years of job related experience in law enforcement/hospital private security setting, or combination of Secondary education and job related experience. 4. Relevant experience in behavioral health crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques and training. 5. Possesses a valid Ohio driver's license (and ability to obtain and maintain eligibility of insurability as determined by the CHMCA insurance carrier's requirements to operate CHMCA vehicles) and reliable transportation to report to alternate sites. 6. Successful completion of the OPOTA Private Security Academy and OPOTA 20-hour firearms certification within six months of hire or hold a current OPOTA Basic Police Academy certification. 7. Required to achieve and maintain department's qualifying firearms standards for duration of employment. 8. Successfully complete thorough background investigation. 9. Demonstrate psychological fitness commensurate with the role of an armed officer, evaluated by a Psychologist designated by the Department of Public Safety Director and Chief.
