Actuarial Technician (Associate) - GMP Equalisation team

The Opportunity:

We have an excellent new opportunity for an Actuarial Technician to join our Central Actuarial Team (CAT), primarily working on GMP Equalisation processing.

Working for a leading Human Resources and Benefits Consultancy, you will be joining a high performing team providing central actuarial support on a wide range of defined benefit (DB) pension schemes projects.

The role is to work in a team that will be carrying out the recalculation of benefits allowing for the impact of GMP Equalisation, from gathering the data, working with the various parties to gather the information required, the actual processing of the calculations, eventually working with the administrators to update the systems.

It is an exciting opportunity to see the process through from beginning to end and will provide many challenges to overcome along the way. You will have the chance to use your problem-solving skills on a project that ultimately changes members benefits.

Longer term, once the GMP Equalisation project reaches conclusion the candidate would move into either working within the CAT team or into the consulting team.

We would also support you if you chose to follow exam path set out by the Actuarial Profession to become a fellow of the IFoA.

You will ideally have a strong interest in or exposure to working with defined benefit (DB) pension schemes. Strong numeracy and excel skills are essential.

Some responsibilities will include:

  • Data manipulation using Excel;

  • Detailed benefit calculations for bulk member data;

  • Extensive use of Excel and advanced formulas;

  • Applying actuarial techniques to problem solving;

  • Communicating with several interested parties;

  • To be involved in other ad-hoc project-based work;

  • Contribution to weekly workflow meetings;

  • Maintaining accurate time recording of all work completed;

  • Adhering to Corporate Policies and Procedures (CPPs).

Experience / skills necessary to succeed in role:

  • Progression through the actuarial exams;

  • Ideally degree educated in a highly numerate subject;

  • Ideally some understanding of defined benefits (DB) pensions schemes including some calculations experience. GMP knowledge especially desirable.

  • Strong excel skills are essential, including knowledge of advanced formulas.

  • A high level of focus and attention to detail, for example when working with high volumes of data.

  • Tenacity to investigate data issues with good logical and quantitative thinking.

  • Ability to manage work and study to ensure progression in the exam path chosen;

  • Ability to listen well and take direction to ensure personal development is achieved;

  • Strong communication skills and a flexible attitude;

  • Able to prioritise and manage their own work and organise themselves effectively to ensure deadlines are met;

  • Able to work and contribute as part of a team, as well as ability to work independently

  • Computer literate in all Microsoft Office applications.
