Seattle Children's Research Associate II - Bench in Seattle, Washington

Research Associate II

The Coler Lab is a dynamic team of translational researchers focused on understanding the complex pathogen-host interactions that control the outcome of infection and immunity. The laboratory is dedicated to characterizing vaccines and host-directed therapies against a variety of epidemic and pandemic diseases, including tuberculosis (TB), nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and those caused by positive strand RNA viruses. The laboratory is a member of the Center for Global Infectious Disease Research at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute (SCRI), is a lead component of the Immune Mechanisms of Protection Against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (IMPAc-TB) consortium, an endpoint lab for the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC), and is one of 9 Vaccine Treatment and Evaluation Units (VTEUs) within the IDCRC consortium that design and conduct clinical trials to evaluate promising vaccines, treatments, and devices for infectious disease, each funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Coler Lab (https://www.seattlechildrens.org/research/centers-programs/global-infectious-disease-research/research-areas-and-labs/coler-lab/) is recruiting a Research Associate to contribute to one or more projects that involve in vivo infectious disease models, processing of human blood and tissue samples, and performing an array of microbiological and immunological assays. The successful candidate will be committed to SCRI’s mission of turning discoveries into lifesaving therapies, be a strong team player capable of working with moderate supervision and committed to learning new skills. A strong background in immunology and flow cytometry are preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Animal work including injections via multiple routes, blood collection, dissections, tissue collection, monitoring temperatures, weights in mice under BSL2/BSL3 conditions

• Perform specimen processing, and shipping for domestic and international sites

• Contributes to maintenance of the sample repository including sample tracking procedures

• Perform intracellular cytokine staining/multi-color flow cytometry, antibody neutralization, ELISPOTS, ELISA and other immunological assays

• Infecting mice under BSL2/3 conditions

• Enumeration of positive strand RNA viruses, nontuberculous mycobacteria and/or Mycobacterium tuberculosis from experimental animals by culture under BSL3 conditions

• Prepare blood and tissues for ex vivo assays under BSL2/BSL3 conditions

• Monitors laboratory supply inventories and works with purchasing to ensure available stocks

• Communicates with research scientists and management on a regular basis

• Utilize mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data

• Maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice

• Strong organizational and mathematical skills (e.g. dilutions, conversions, overage calculations)

• Close attention to detail including recording observations and findings in audited lab notebooks following established guidelines

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Proficiency in MS Office and scientific data/graphics/statistical programs

• Proficient in trouble-shooting experiments and maintenance of equipment

• Ability to multi-task and perform multiple scientific protocols and procedures under direction

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

• Takes initiative to schedule work and has excellent time management skills

• Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy

• Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work in a team environment

• Enjoys learning new concepts or technical skills

• Does not require travel outside of Seattle

• Requires infrequent evening or weekend work

Requirements:

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related field.

  • At least five (5) years laboratory experience.

Required Credentials:

  • N/A.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related field.

  • Previous research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, and tissue culture techniques.

Min to Max Hourly Salary: $27.61 - $41.42 /hr

Min to Max Annual Salary: $57,428.80 - $86,153.60 /yr

Salary Information:

This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.

Seattle Children’s offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
