Contributes to the overall success of the Digital Newsroom, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

The Digital News & Thought Leadership Writer / Editor is accountable for conceptualizing and executing Scotiabank news stories across key subjects with a special emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) issues, as well as Finance, Economics, Technology and others. Researches, pitches, writes and edits content. Contributes to social amplification across internal and external channels. Uses multimedia, digital publishing and analytics tools.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Report to the Deputy Editor of the Scotiabank newsroom, the Writer/Editor supports the delivery of an editorial strategy that reinforces Scotiabank’s differentiated business model, culture, key growth and investment priorities, and thought leadership on issues that matter, in particular ESG:

  • Interview experts inside and outside Scotiabank on issues that matter to stakeholders

  • Connect dots between macro themes and Scotiabank’s strategy and priorities

  • Demonstrate agility and commitment to delivering results

  • Write compelling content that drives traffic and engagement on all owned channels, including intranet and newsroom.

  • Partner with colleagues across Global Communications & Social Impact to identify differentiated story angles that enhance the Scotiabank brand,

  • Incorporate leading-edge multimedia that drive high engagement and social sharing

  • Drive social media strategies to stimulate conversations across owned and earned channels

  • Adapt at digital publishing and analytics reporting

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

  • Champion a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Undergraduate degree or postgrad certificate in communications, journalism or equivalent experience

  • 5 to 7 years working experience as a reporter or content creator in a corporate or agency environment.

  • Solid understanding of ESG issues and experience creating compelling content on those issues

  • Experience writing op-eds or similar opinion pieces laying out clear lines of argument in an approachable way

  • Ability to lead through influence and be motivated to drive an agenda

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Expert research and accuracy skills

  • Knowledge and experience in owned, earned and paid media

  • Good working knowledge of multimedia, publishing and analytics tools

  • Knowledge of the financial services industry

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Strong interpersonal, communications and relationship management skills

  • Attention to detail and high level of accountability for the quality and timely completion of projects

  • Ability to identify and prioritize issues and determine the nature of the response required
